Boat Electrical Inspection Checklist
Long Beach Marine Electric made this boat electrical inspection checklist for owners who want to check their own boat before winter storms, a trip or a survey. It covers 26 checks across shore power, batteries and charging, the bilge, corrosion and bonding, and navigation lights, each one tied to the standard it comes from.
What's on the checklist
- Shore power: plug and inlet heat damage, cord condition, polarity, pedestal holding under load, ELCI presence.
- Batteries and charging: terminals, securing and fusing, resting voltage, charger mode, alternator output, parasitic draw.
- Bilge: automatic operation with water, power that bypasses the battery switch, fusing, high-water alarm.
- Corrosion and bonding: anode wear, galvanic protection, bonding continuity.
- Lights and electronics: navigation lights on the right switches, voltage at the fixture, electronics during cranking.
Anything you can't tick is worth a closer look. See the guides for what each item means, or the problem assessment to judge urgency.
