[Long Beach Marine Electric](/) connects liveaboards with licensed, insured marine electricians for liveaboard boat electrical work: managing household-style loads on a 30- or 50-amp shore connection, replacing the inlets and cords that overheat under constant load, and building battery and solar systems that cover the hours away from the dock. Living aboard puts a boat's electrical system under a continuous load it was rarely designed for.

## What happens on the first visit

1. A load list of everything you run and when: heater, water heater, A/C, cooking, refrigeration, laptop and TV.
2. Heat inspection of the shore-power inlet, cord ends and main breaker connections, which run hot under long, heavy loads.
3. Comparison of peak load against the shore service: 30 A at 120 V is 3,600 W in total.
4. Battery, charger and inverter check for the times power drops or you're away from the dock.
5. A written plan with load-management options and a fixed price.

## The 30-amp math

A 30-amp, 120-volt shore connection supplies about **3,600 watts in total**. A plug-in space heater draws about 1,500 W (12.5 A). A marine water heater element typically draws 1,500 W too. Run both and a coffee maker, and the boat is at its limit before the fridge, charger or microwave cycles on. The main breaker trips, or worse, the inlet and cord run hot for hours just under the trip point. Heat-discolored connections are the warning sign. Faults between the pedestal and the inlet cause about 12% of boat fires in BoatUS claims data.

## Load management that works

- **Priority circuits.** Separating essential loads (refrigeration, charging, bilge) from comfort loads (heat, water heater).
- **Lower-draw appliances.** Heaters with low settings, induction cooking sized to the service, and LED lighting.
- **A locking, sealed shore connection** such as SmartPlug that handles continuous load and resists corrosion.
- **Moving up to 50 A** where the marina offers it and the boat's wiring can support it.
- **An inverter/charger** that can supplement shore power for short peaks on some models, and covers outages.

## Living aboard in the area's harbors

Long Beach's city marinas set aside liveaboard slips, which have waitlists, and Redondo Beach's King Harbor is known as liveaboard-friendly. Either way, the boat spends months on shore power under constant load, and the shore-power path takes the strain first. See [shore power repair](/shore-power-repair/) for inlet and cord work, and [marine solar](/marine-solar-installation/) for reducing dependence on the dock.

## Insurance, warranty and who pays

Liveaboard upgrades are owner-paid. Most start with a heat inspection and load review, about one to two hours, followed by a fixed written price for the changes you choose.

## What's included

- Load list and service comparison
- Inlet, cord and breaker heat inspection
- Priority and comfort circuit separation
- SmartPlug or sealed inlet upgrade
- 30A to 50A upgrade assessment
- Inverter/charger installation
- Solar and battery for off-dock hours
- Safe heater and water-heater circuits

## DIY vs cheap fix vs proper liveaboard setup

DIY

Cheap operator

Proper marine work

Old cord, adapters

New cord only

Sealed inlet and cord, heat-checked

Heating

Household heater on any outlet

Same

Sized circuit, priority control

Backup power

None

Portable inverter

Inverter/charger, solar, sized bank

Result

Hot inlet, fire risk

Trips less, still hot

Straight answers

## Liveaboard Boat Electrical questions

### Why does my 30-amp breaker keep tripping when I run the heater?

A 30 A, 120 V service supplies about 3,600 W total. A 1,500 W heater plus a 1,500 W water heater uses most of it, so one more load trips the main. Separating comfort loads or moving to 50 A service fixes it.

### Is it safe to run a space heater on my boat?

Only a marine-appropriate heater on a circuit sized for it, with connections in good condition. Long, heavy loads overheat worn inlets and cords. Have them checked if they're warm or discolored.

### Can I upgrade my boat from 30 A to 50 A?

Often, if the marina offers 50 A at your slip and the boat's inlet, main breaker and panel feed are upgraded to match. The electrician checks what needs to change.

### What battery setup does a liveaboard need?

Enough usable capacity to cover the times you're off shore power, usually with an inverter/charger and often solar. A lithium bank gives the most usable capacity for the weight.

### Who does the work, and how do I know they’re qualified?

Long Beach Marine Electric is a free service that connects you with an independent, licensed and insured marine electrician who holds the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Marine Electrical Certification. Ask your electrician for proof of license and insurance before work starts.
