## The four calls that can’t wait until the weekend

Electrical faults on a boat in a slip get worse while nobody’s aboard. These are the ones to call about today.

### Pedestal keeps tripping

The pedestal is cutting power because current is leaking off the boat. Leave it unplugged until the leak is found, because that current can go into the water.

### Burnt or melted plug

Brown or melted plastic at the inlet means a connection is running hot. In BoatUS claims, AC faults between the pedestal and the inlet cause about 12% of boat fires.

### Bilge pump not cycling

BoatUS research found boats sink at the dock 4 times as often as underway, and nearly half of those sinkings follow heavy rain. A pump that only runs on manual won’t save the boat while you’re away.

### Batteries flat every weekend

A parasitic draw, a failed charger or a dying alternator. A dead bank also means a dead bilge pump.

Straight answers

## Marine electrician questions, answered

### How much does a marine electrician cost in Long Beach?

Expect $140–$200 per hour in 2026, usually with a one- to two-hour minimum for a dockside visit. Diagnosing a pedestal trip typically runs $140–$400, and a 30A shore power inlet replacement about $180–$1,175 depending on parts. The [full cost guide](/guide/marine-electrician-cost/) shows the math.

### Does my boat need to be hauled out for electrical work?

Rarely. Shore power, batteries, chargers, inverters, bilge pumps, panels and most rewiring are done at the slip. Only work below the waterline waits for a haul-out, such as through-hull transducers or shaft anodes.

### Who actually does the work?

Long Beach Marine Electric is a free service that connects you with an independent, licensed and insured marine electrician who holds the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Marine Electrical Certification and works in Long Beach-area marinas. The electrician gives you a written price and does the work. Before work starts, confirm that the electrician carries the license and insurance your job requires.

### Why does my boat keep tripping the shore power pedestal?

Newer marina pedestals cut power when more than 30 mA leaks to ground, the limit in NEC 555.35. The usual causes on the boat are a failing water heater element, an inverter without proper transfer switching, a neutral-to-ground bond, or a damaged shore cord. A dockside leakage test finds the fault, often within an hour.

### How fast can an electrician get to my boat?

You get a callback the same day you call or send the form, and a free estimate within 24 hours. Most Long Beach marina visits are scheduled the same or next day. If the boat is taking on water or the bilge pump has failed, say so on the call so it’s handled as an emergency.

### Which harbors do you cover?

Long Beach (Alamitos Bay, Naples, Shoreline Marina and Rainbow Harbor), Huntington Beach and Huntington Harbour, Newport Beach, and Redondo Beach’s King Harbor. Trailer boats stored at home are covered in Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Seal Beach. See [all service areas](/service-areas/).
