What To Do Now

# Burnt Shore Power Plug: Is It Dangerous and What Should You Do?

Brown plastic, melted pins or a warm plug are all warnings. Here's what's happening and what to do.

By Long Beach Marine Electric · Updated October 6, 2026

**Short answer:** A burnt shore power plug is dangerous. Brown or melted plastic means a loose or corroded contact has been running hot under load, and it can ignite. Unplug it, keep it unplugged, and replace both the cord end and the boat's inlet together. AC faults at that connection cause about 12% of boat fires in BoatUS claims.

[Long Beach Marine Electric](/) treats a burnt shore power plug as an urgent call, because it’s a fire that hasn’t started yet. In BoatUS Marine Insurance claims, **AC electrical faults cause about 12% of boat fires**, typically between the shore-power pedestal and the boat’s inlet. Overheated connectors are the most common way that happens.

## What to do right now

1. **Turn off the pedestal breaker**, then the boat’s main shore-power breaker.
2. **Unplug the cord**, at the pedestal first, wearing gloves if it’s hot.
3. **Don’t plug it back in**, not even to “just charge the batteries.”
4. **Check the inlet on the boat.** If the cord end is burnt, the inlet almost certainly is too.
5. **Keep the bilge powered** from the batteries, and run the engine or use solar if the boat must stay unplugged.

If there’s smoke, flame or a strong burning smell from inside the boat, get off and call 911.

## Why shore power connectors overheat

A shore-power connector carries up to 30 or 50 amps through a few small contact surfaces. When those contacts are clean and tight, resistance is tiny and so is the heat. Salt air corrodes the brass, wear loosens the spring contacts, and a plug that isn’t fully pushed in and locked makes contact on a smaller area. Resistance rises, and heat rises with it.

That heat is worst under long, heavy loads: a space heater, a water heater, battery charging and air conditioning running for hours. The plastic browns first, then the contacts discolor, and eventually the housing melts. Once a connector has been hot, its contacts have lost their temper and spring, and it will run hot again even if cleaned.

## Replace the pair, not just one end

A burnt plug damages the inlet it was connected to, and a damaged inlet damages any new plug pushed into it. The right repair replaces **the cord end and the boat’s inlet together**. The pedestal outlet is the marina’s responsibility, so report it to the office if it’s discolored.

**Typical costs:** replacing a Marinco inlet interior (~$36 retail) plus the cord end is a small job. A full SmartPlug 30 A inlet and 50 ft cord runs about $540–$575 retail. Installed, most inlet-and-cord repairs land around $180–$1,175 at Long Beach labor rates. See the [shore power installation cost guide](/guide/shore-power-installation-cost/).

## Preventing it from happening again

- **Push in fully and twist-lock** every connection, and use the threaded collar.
- **Keep connectors dry**, with weather boots or sealed connectors.
- **Don’t run at the limit for hours.** On 30 A, a heater and a water heater together are close to the 3,600 W ceiling. See [liveaboard boat electrical](/liveaboard-boat-electrical/).
- **Inspect monthly** for discoloration, and feel the plug under load. Warm means trouble coming.
- **Consider a sealed locking system** for heavy continuous loads.

## Bottom line

A brown or melted shore-power connector means unplug now and replace both ends. It’s a fire risk, not a cosmetic problem. See [shore power repair](/shore-power-repair/) or call **(562) 374-7233** for a same-day callback.

## Related questions

### Can I clean a burnt shore power plug and keep using it?

No. Heat changes the spring tension of the contacts, so a cleaned connector will run hot again. Replace it, and replace the inlet it mated with.

### Why does my shore power plug get warm?

A warm plug means resistance at the contacts, from corrosion, wear or a connector not fully seated and locked. Under long heavy loads like heaters and water heaters, that resistance generates heat.

### Should I upgrade to SmartPlug?

For boats running heavy continuous loads, such as liveaboards, a sealed locking connector like SmartPlug resists the corrosion and loose contacts that cause overheating. A 30 A SmartPlug inlet and 50 ft cord runs about $540–$575 retail.
