# Holiday Boat Parade Lighting Safety (2026)

By Long Beach Marine Electric · October 6, 2026

[Long Beach Marine Electric](/) connects boat owners with marine electricians across Long Beach and Orange County, where December means holiday boat parades. Parade decorations add electrical loads that most boat systems weren’t designed for, so here’s how to power them safely.

## The local parades

- **Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade:** the 118th edition runs **five nights, December 16–20, 2026**, on a 14-mile course through Newport Harbor with over 100 boats, according to Visit Newport Beach.
- **Naples Island Christmas Boat Parade, Long Beach:** held each December through the Naples canals, with viewing from the 2nd Street and Appian Way bridges and Alamitos Bay Marina. The 2025 parade was December 20. Check Visit Long Beach for the 2026 date.
- **Huntington Harbour** also holds a holiday boat parade. Check the organizers for dates.

## Where decorated boats go wrong

**Overloading the inverter or a small generator.** Strings of lights add up, and older incandescent strings draw far more than LEDs. Add the boat’s own loads and a small inverter or portable generator can overload.

**Running household extension cords and power strips** across a wet deck. Indoor cords and strips aren’t made for spray and rain.

**Flattening the batteries.** A night of lights from an inverter can drain a lead-acid bank, leaving nothing for starting or the bilge pump on the way home.

**Tying into boat wiring.** Splicing decorations into existing circuits overloads them and leaves connections that corrode after the season.

## How to do it right

1. **Use LED light strings.** They draw a fraction of what incandescent strings do, which makes everything else easier.
2. **Add up the load** before the parade: every string’s wattage plus the boat’s own running loads, and compare that with your inverter or generator rating and battery capacity.
3. **Power decorations from a dedicated source**, such as an inverter circuit or a properly connected generator, not by splicing into navigation or bilge circuits.
4. **Keep connections dry and off the deck.** Use outdoor-rated cords and seal connections.
5. **Keep navigation lights clearly visible.** Decorations must not obscure or be confused with your required lights.
6. **Remove temporary wiring after the season** so it doesn’t become next year’s corrosion fault.

Electrical faults cause more than half of boat fires in BoatUS claims data. Temporary holiday wiring shouldn’t add to that.

## Want it checked before the parade?

An electrician can size an inverter or battery setup for your display, or check a temporary installation before the first night. See [marine inverter installation](/marine-inverter-installation/) or call **(562) 374-7233**.
